Amputee Coalition National Conference hosts over 650 participants from the Lost Limb and Diverse Limb community

PALM DESERT, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The 2022 National Amputee Coalition Conference is taking place in Palm Desert at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa and is hosting more than 650 attendees.

Paralympic silver medalist and amputee combat veteran, John Register was named Acting President and CEO of the Amputee Coalition. John Register will lead the organization to convene his 2022 National Conference (August 10-13) and youth camp, building staff capacity and deepening relationships with community members and partners.

The Amputee Coalition is the only national non-profit organization serving people living with limb loss or limb difference. The Amputee Coalition empowers those affected by limb loss and limb difference to realize their full potential through support, education, advocacy and prevention.

Register served six years in the U.S. Army — including Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and active duty with the U.S. Army’s World Class Athletes Program — earning nine gold medals in the Armed Forces Competition and two world military championships. Register had his left leg amputated after a misstep over an obstacle changed his life. Register hypertensed his knee and severed the popliteal artery. He started swimming to help with his recovery, made the US Paralympic team in 1996, then won a silver medal in the long jump – as he set an American record – and sprinted to fifth in the 100 meters and 200 meters at the US Paralympic Games. Register, who received the coveted Paul G. Hearne Emerging Leadership Award for founding the United States Olympic and Paralympic Games, is one of the few disability rights advocates who bridges the gap between sport, employment and empowerment of people with disabilities around the world.
