In 1991, the founder and chairman of the Shing Kwan Group, Singapore SP Tao, endowed with visionary foresight and an entrepreneurial spirit, set his sights on developing a futuristic shopping complex on the island. To achieve its goal, Tao acquired Overseas Realty (Ceylon) Ltd., a Colombo Stock Exchange-listed company, which owned the undeveloped land at Echelon Square.
As one of the earliest and most prominent foreign investors in Sri Lanka, Tao realized that to realize his vision, an ingenious plan with three main data was needed – the most suitable design concept, a business of the world’s leading construction and no bank loans.
Tao’s enthusiastic passion for Sri Lanka and unwavering belief in its growth prospects came to fruition with the commissioning of the 39-story twin towers. Accelerated development of the country, the foundation stone of the highest structure in the country, with an investment of 130 million dollars, took place in 1992.
It was said at the time to be the largest foreign direct investment (FDI) and years ahead of any commercial development in the country. On October 12, 1997, WTC Colombo was officially declared open.
Tao’s bold leadership led the company for three decades where he served as chairman until his passing last year.
